Growing Responsibly.
Growing Better.

Rainbow Park Nurseries combines advanced growing technology, responsible resource use, and a genuine commitment to sustainability -from glasshouse to garden centre.

Sustainability is Built into How We Grow

At Rainbow Park Nurseries, sustainability is embedded in the day-to-day decisions of how we grow. From the technology we invest in, to the materials we use, and the waste we reduce, our approach to the environmental responsibility is practical, ongoing, and grounded in nearly fifty years of understanding what it actually means to grow plants at scale in a way that can last.

We recognise that our retail partners face increasing scrutiny from their own customers and stakeholders around the environmental credentials of their supply chains. We take that seriously.

Water & Resource Management

Recycled & Reused Water
Water is one of the most significant resources in a large-scale nursery operation, and managing it responsibly is a priority at Rainbow Park. Our glasshouse systems are designed to capture, recycle, and reuse water throughout the production cycle — reducing overall consumption and minimising runoff from the nursery site.

Precision Fertigation
Our glasshouses operate under Priva Environmental Computer Software —the same system used by leading commercial growers worldwide. Priva manages watering schedules and fertigation (the application of fertilisers through irrigation) with precision, delivering exactly what each crop needs, when it needs it. This eliminates the over-application of fertiliser and chemicals that is common in less controlled growing environments, reducing both input costs and environmental impact.

Smarter Energy Use Through Technology

Heating three hectares of glasshouses is a significant energy commitment — which is exactly why we've invested in systems that make that energy go further. Our computerised growing environment doesn't just produce better plants; it uses substantially less energy to do so than conventional approaches.

“Everyone likes to be clean and green — but there are benefits also. We don't use as much heat, natural gas, or other resources to heat the buildings because the computers can make adjustments based on the outside temperatures and light levels.”
Andrew Tayler, General Manager

The Priva system continuously monitors external conditions and adjusts heating, ventilation, and shading accordingly — maintaining optimal growing conditions while avoiding the energy waste of fixed-schedule heating systems. This means our glasshouses respond dynamically to the day, rather than running at a fixed setting regardless of conditions outside.

Reducing Waste Across the Operation

Insife Rainbow Park Facility

In-House Biodegradable Pots
Rainbow Park manufactures biodegradable paper pots in-house using our own paper pot machine. These pots replace conventional plastic containers for suitable plant lines, reducing the volume of plastic that enters the supply chain and ultimately the waste stream. Plants in biodegradable pots can be planted directly without removing the container, reducing transplant shock and eliminating plastic disposal at the consumer end.

Future Post Partnership
Rainbow Park has partnered with Future Post, a New Zealand business that repurposes plastic waste —including material from nursery operations — into durable fence posts and other construction products. Rather than sending plastic to landfill, this partnership gives used nursery plastic a second life in long-lasting infrastructure, a genuine circular economy outcome.

Controlled Spraying
Pest and disease management in a large-scale nursery is unavoidable — but how it's managed makes a significant difference. Our precision growing systems allow us to monitor plant health closely and apply sprays in a controlled, targeted way rather than on a fixed calendar. This reduces the overall volume of chemicals used across the operation and limits unnecessary exposure to beneficial insects, soil, and water.

Healthier Plants,
Less Waste

One of the most effective sustainability levers in the nursery industry is growing plants that don't fail. High-health, disease-resistant plants require fewer chemical inputs to maintain, generate less waste through crop losses, and perform better in retail environments —reducing returns and markdowns across the supply chain.

Rainbow Park maintains a constant renewal programme of stock plants sourced from world-class international breeders. These relationships give us access to the latest genetics — plants specifically selected for strength, uniformity, disease resistance, and performance in commercial retail conditions. Every plant that leaves our nursery carrying the Enrich with Nature brand has been grown from stock proven to perform.

Our Commitment Going Forward

We're proud of what we've built —but we're not standing still. Rainbow Park continues to invest in technologies, partnerships, and practices that reduce our environmental footprint, improve resource efficiency, and raise the standard of what responsible large-scale growing looks like in New Zealand.
